Last Sunday was more than just a celebration—it was a milestone in the journey of empowerment, courage, and transformation. SOMA proudly celebrated the graduation of the very first cohort of 30 girls from Príncipe Island who completed our holistic SUP-Therapy program that began in October.

From the very first paddle stroke to the final embrace of graduation, this day was filled with moments that touched the soul and reminded us why we do this work.

The morning began with two friendly individual challenges—a Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) and swimming one. But these were no ordinary competitions. They were acts of bravery. Of girls daring to show up, to try, to fall and get back up. Every medal handed out was a symbol of effort, courage, and personal growth.

One of the most emotional highlights came when the girls debuted SOMA’s very own anthem. Their voices carried stories of change and resilience.

As they took the stage to reflect on their psycho-empowerment journey, we heard stories not just of what they learned, but we witnessed something truly powerful: girls who were once shy, guarded, and unsure of themselves now standing tall, speaking openly, and embracing their emotions with pride. This is the heart of what SOMA stands for—growth that begins within and ripples outward.

The older participants, our incredible Riders, presented a theatre play. Through their own words and creativity, they traced their journey: from being invited on the street to join SOMA, to conquering their fear of the ocean and navigating moments of family resistance. Their story was a reflection of the power of empathy, community and perseverance.

A particularly moving moment was the recital of an original poem, "Surfista de Alma" (Soul Surfer): a poetic tribute to inner strength and self-discovery.

At the close of the ceremony, each girl received a graduation certificate, a SOMA bracelet, and a medal—symbols not just of what they completed, but of who they are now: confident, connected, and empowered.

Regional President Filipe Nascimento captured the spirit of the day beautifully:

“We saw the spark in the girls' eyes today, whether in the swimming or SUP competition, as they shared what they’ve learned during this time—it fills us with immense pride.”

He also reminded us of the transformative power of education and sport, especially in the hands of girls determined to grow and lead.

One mother spoke with gratitude and emotion:

“This training was very good for our girls because it’s not just about them having fun—it also helps them understand how to live in today’s world. The SOMA team talks to them about sexual activity and the importance of speaking openly with their parents at home.”

This event didn’t go unnoticed—local media, including RSTP, shared the story, amplifying the voices of these young changemakers. You can watch their report here

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to HBD Principe and Principe Collection for fully financing this project and, once again, making this unforgettable day possible by generously providing their hotel facilities. Without your continued support, SOMA in Príncipe would not be possible

At SOMA, we believe in the strength of community, the healing power of the ocean, and the unstoppable force of empowered girls. This celebration was a testament to all of that.

Congratulations to our graduates. You are not just riding the wave. You are the wave of change!

In this second part, the mentor shares the heart of SOMA’s mission on Príncipe Island: creating a safe space where girls can be children, be heard, and discover their inner strength. Through Psycho-Empowerment classes, emotional education, and close work with families, SOMA helps girls build self-esteem, autonomy, and confidence to shape their own futures, even in the face of deep gender inequality.
