After identifying the need to create financially sustainable alternatives for SOMA, and guided by our strong belief in the power of surfonomics as a catalyst for social impact, SOMA made a strategic decision to work on the idea of developing a social enterprise.

This new initiative is designed to generate revenue for SOMA while simultaneously creating job opportunities for the local surf community, both young men and women. At its core, the project reinforces our long-term commitment to inclusive, community-driven, and sustainable development, ensuring that SOMA can continue to grow with purpose and resilience.

To support this journey, we partnered with the NOVA Social Consulting from NOVA SBE, whose contribution has been instrumental in shaping the strategic foundations of this new social business.

What Are We Working On?

Throughout this collaboration, the NOVA Social Consulting team has worked closely with SOMA to transform an initial idea into a structured and viable project. Together, we aim to create a social business, which will finantially support our surf-therapy project in Sao Tome.

To do this, we focused our initial work together on several key strategic areas:

1. Sector Benchmarking

A comprehensive benchmarking analysis was conducted to assess the feasibility and positioning of the concept we brought to the table. By comparing similar initiatives and trends within the sector, this work helped validate the idea and identify opportunities, which we will be sharing very soon.

2. DNA Framework: Defining Our Identity

The team developed a DNA Framework to clearly define the identity, values, and purpose of this new social enterprise. This framework ensures alignment between mission, impact, and communication, providing a strong foundation for future growth.

3. Target Audience Analysis

Understanding who we want to reach is essential. Through a detailed target audience analysis, we gained valuable insights into how to engage our community more effectively and maximize social and economic impact.

4. Communication Strategy

Finally, the collaboration included the development of a communication strategy to support a strong and effective launch. This work lays the groundwork for how we will present the project, share its story, and connect with partners and supporters.

Why This Collaboration Matters

Building a sustainable future requires strategic thinking, fresh perspectives, and strong partnerships.

Working with the NOVA Social Consulting has brought all of this together, combining academic rigor with practical insight, and aligning impact with long-term viability.

This collaboration brings us one step closer to launching this new project, and we are excited to share more details in the near future.

A Word of Thanks

A huge thank you to the dedicated and talented team at the NOVA Social Consulting for their professionalism, insight, and commitment throughout this process. Together, we are building a stronger, more sustainable SOMA, powered by surf, community, and purpose.
